Just Writing Things – 5

The end of this year is going to be insane while I try to get everything done that I have planned. I touched on this in my monthly update but I’m ready to go into a more detail here.

Right now: I’m writing SKIN AND SCALE (SAS) the “sequel” to FROM STARS, COME DRAGONS (FSCD.) I hit 20K words last night and am trucking right along. If the momentum holds, I should be done with the rough draft by or before the end of October!

November or NaNoWriMo: I will be writing a script for/with my husband. I think he’s still trying to settle on an idea, so no more about that.

After the first draft of the script is done: It’s back to the DRAGONS series. Which I think will only be one more book. Won’t know until I write it.

After the entire DRAGONS series is drafted: I’m going to rewrite FSCD.

Yeah… This was not an easy decision to make. I mean, the story’s done, why go back?

Well, it turns out, for several reasons…

  1. FSCD is written in first person present tense. SAS is written in third person past tense. They don’t read like they’re the same story which can turn off readers.
  2. FSCD is young adult. SAS is adult. Not great for marketing reasons.
  3. The timelines of each book overlap a lot, so there’s the possibility of telling part of the story in both books. Which could be OK from a different point of view (POV) but tricky to do well without boring the reader.
  4. Publisher feedback, in one of my many rejection letters, confirmed I need to revise POV and tense of FSCD to third person past tense and maybe add another POV to help draw the reader in.

There are probably more but those are the main reasons I’ve decided to rewrite FSCD.

This is going to be a pretty big project and there are a lot of things I need to finish before I can tackle it but I’m excited. Writing SAS has renewed my love for this series and I want to see it in reader’s hands someday.

On the upside, and the reason this series is on the top of my to-do list, the publisher that gave me feedback wants to see the revised version!

There you have it, folks! What do you think? Am I crazy? (I mean, I am but specifically in this case. LOL)

Thanks for reading!
